1971 Vegas January 26th - February 23rd
January 16th the national Jaycees in a Memphis gala honoured Elvis as one of the ten outstanding young men in America, the speech is available on various CD's and Video's
Elvis opened his fourth month long engagement at the international Hotel. At this season of shows Elvis introduced the now famous 2001 theme "Also Sprach Zarusthra" Elvis didn't use it at the beginning of the shows until the 20th February. Just prior to the Opening show, and replaced 'Can't Help Falling In Love' with 'It's Impossible' as a closing number. Another threat came in against Elvis' life, the demand was for $50,000. As a precaution Elvis carried a pistol throughout the engagement. The FBI were in the crowed on Opening night. Elvis' fourth Vegas season was also the weakest season so far. Due to illness and lack of challenge, the shows were occasionally uninspired compared to earlier seasons, and often ran under 40-45 minutes in length.

Elvis returns to International
Elvis Presley, unquestionably the most popular entertainer to ever appear on the famed Las Vegas Strip, returns to the main showroom of the International Hotel Tuesday evening to open another four-week engagement. It will be the fourth International appearance in the past 18 months for the handsome entertainer.
Elvis, backed by comic Sammy Shore and two-vocal groups, the Sweet Inspirations and The Imperials, will perform twice nightly at 8 p.m. and midnight through February 23. Except on opening night when there will be one performance only at 10:15 p.m. Elvis return to the 2.000- seat Showroom International coincides with the release of his latest RCA album, appropriately entitled "Elvis Country" - a description that could easily apply to Las Vegas during a Presley appearance. His latest MGM movie, a documentary filmed during his big International "Summer Festival" appearance last August, is also in world wide distribution and is resulting in an unusually heavy demand for reservations, not only from throughout the United States but from many foreign countries as well.
In each of his three earlier dates at the International, Elvis attracted over 100.000 fans into the hotel's plush showroom. He continues to hold every existing Las Vegas attendance mark and hotel officials are gearing for another record-smashing stand.
Joe Guercio will once again conduct the 35- member International Hotel Orchestra for Elvis.

Elvis's musical intro. by the "way up there for the occasion" Joe Guercio international Hotel orchestra last Tuesday turned out to be a very tough "act" to follow... Based upon the "2001 Space Odyssey" and replete with tympany, the overall effect needed only a "parting" of the high Big "I" showroom ceiling then a moment of hush followed by a sepulchral voice announcing. "My other son, Elvis!"
Suggested subtitle: The "third coming" of EP... The "King' was in great form ... We especially appreciated the addition of an authentic hymn "How Great Thou Art." ... This innovation was a high spot which might play even better at the second or third selection from the end ... "Impossible Dream" is the end and the only "down" thing for us in Elvis's generous portion of the show... (End of our minority report).... The Sweet Inspirations opened and are completely "together" this time ... Elvis, the Imperials, the Sweet Inspirations and that almost "almighty" J. Guercio orchestra are a fantastic aural as well as visual experience...

Elvis was suffering from flu and he had a temperature of 103°. He was told he didn't have to go on stage that night, but he still went on for both shows. The only problem was he was only on stage for around 30min each show.

During this show Elvis had to cut the show short by almost 30 minutes, because a young woman jumped on the stage trying to get to Elvis and Elvis hit himself in the mouth with the microphone, and started to bleed. Between shows he visited a dentist to have a chip in his tooth repaired.

Total Attendance 125,400
A few days before closing Elvis started to wear his "Attendance Champion" belt awarded in 1969, apparently he didn't want to wear it until he was sure his shows were all sold out. As usual Elvis broke his own record for Attendance. Elvis Attended Ann-Margret's Opening at the International.
Except for two recording sessions Elvis and Priscilla spent the next five months vacationing in Memphis and Los Angeles.
Voices From The Press
"...Although Presley says he's recorded 480 songs, waggishly adding that he intends to sing all of them, his program is tailored to the ideal length to leave them hungry...It's an exciting balance of his latest hits such as 'There Goes My Everything', earlier clicks like 'How Great Thou Art' and 'Hound Dog', swingers such as 'Sweet Caroline' and pops like 'Something', all sung with flair and knockout visual impact. He closes with a surprising 'The Impossible Dream', and does it beautifully...Elvis Presley never stops growing as an entertainer and, not incidentally, he sings superbly..."
