Exhibits Of Elvis Art By Betty Harper

Elvis artwork by Betty Harper will be showcased at The Center for Southern Folklore, located in Memphis, August 1, 2012 – October 19, 2012 and at the Birthplace of Elvis in Tupelo, Miss., November 1, 2012 – January 15, 2013.

In observance of the 35th anniversary of Elvis' passing and in honor of the 40th anniversary of The Center for Southern Folklore, more than 100 pieces of Betty Harper's original Elvis artwork will be on display for fans around the world to enjoy.
Since she was first entranced by the magic of Elvis in the 50's, Betty has created more than 10,000 portraits of the king, capturing every period of his life. Although Betty's artwork includes drawings of famous statesmen, entertainers and sports heroes, she has become most famous for her portraits of Elvis.

With countless awards and ribbons by the time she graduated from Dreux American High School in France, Betty studied at the American Academy in Paris where she continued to develop as an artist with a style distinctly her own. "The subject matter of my art varies, but my first love has always been faces." As she grew older, her interest in Elvis intensified. "There was something incredibly inspiring about him. He pushed right to the limit of his potential, always himself, always trying to be the best he could be." "Every face has a story to tell," said Betty. "Every time I draw him, I see another side, almost another person. Just when I think I've exhausted all the possibilities, have sketched every angle, every expression, I begin to draw and discover another."

Elvis and Bobby Dick. He was part of 'Bobby Dick and the Sundowners' who mainly covered contemporary bands and opened for the Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner and others.

A little about these two above pictures from Bobby

Photo was taken by my brother Michael Dick unsing Pentax 35 mm Spot-Matic on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood sometime in April of 1968 while Elvis was taping his Elvis 1968 T.V. Special.

It was outside the offices of ³Binder and Howe², ie: Steve Binder and Bones Howe who produced and recorded show for t.v. At the time, The Sundowners were also being recorded and produced by Bones Howe for Decca Records and during a meeting, Bones mentioned to me that Elvis was in the next office. In any case, I had another appointment, so my brother and I got in the elevator and all of a sudden we heard someone say ³Hold on there² . . . and who gets in but Elvis?

He was very friendly, allowed numerous photo ops with my brother and I, right there on Sunset Boulevard. Later in 1973 while Elvis was touring in Hampton, Virginia, I was able to get back stage using 8 x 10 photo of Elvis and myself and Elvis signed white Kodak carboard frame with picture from photo store. By the way, he was in great voice and being concert was in Virginia, when he started singing American Trilogy . . . you thought the South was going to rise again.

Rehearsal and performance schedule for June 29, 1968. The "arena" segment mentioned on the schedule included the two stand-up performances that featured Elvis singing alone on the round stage, surrounded by the audience and backed by a full orchestra.

"Behind the scenes" with Loving You

Some of the insider details he revealed include the following.

• "Elvis drives a $10,000 gorgeous white convertible, and one sequence called for the car to be covered with loving messages written in bright red lipstick by ardent teen-age fans. This posed a problem for the studio, for it was impossible to remove the lipstick without ruining the paint. A property man finally found a solution: a mixture of red show-card coloring, cornstarch and water looking exactly like lipstick, but rubbed off leaving the paint sparkling white."

• "During the filming of [Loving You] at Paramount, the studio was deluged with an average of five hundred telephone calls a day for Elvis. Some came as far away as London. While the callers were predominately female, there was a surprising number of boys phoning."

• "One day the officer on duty at the main studio gate was approached by a couple, and the man said, with a Southern accent, 'Howdy, officer. Can you tell me how to get into this place? We've got a boy working here.' The officer politely inquired whom the lad might be. Before the man could finish Elvis Presley, the gates were opened, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Presley of Memphis, Tennessee, were ushered in."

• "Hundreds of teen-age fans lined up at the gate to watch their idol drive out in his white Eldorado Cadillac at the end of the day. They wanted to take photos, be photographed with him and have him sign autographs. This sometimes took as long as two hours, and while Elvis was cooperative, he came to work around eight each morning and didn't leave until almost seven p.m. So the police chief of the studio hired six extra securing officers to clear the way for Elvis to drive out at night."

• "While Elvis was making [Loving You] the mail department received conservatively two thousand pieces of mail each day for him; one teen-ager was sending him her 128th letter. The mail was turned over to Colonel Parker's secretary and it was her duty to see that it was sorted and answered correctly. A great deal of the mail was shown to Elvis, and he spent a couple of hours each day signing letters and autographing specially requested photos."

• "On the set of [Loving You] Elvis became nervous if interrupted by members of the press, so the set was closed during the shooting so that he could concentrate on his acting."
