1971 Lake Tahoe Engagement July 20th  - August 2nd

On June 1st Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo opens to the public. Also on June 26th the International Hotel in Las Vegas becomes the Hilton, and they throw a surprise 62nd birthday party for the Colonel, and on the 29th the Memphis City Council votes to change the name of Highway 51 South from South Parkway to the Mississippi state line, to "Elvis Presley Boulevard. So Elvis' address changes from 3764 Highway South to 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard. A formal renaming ceremony will take place in January 1972.
 
Elvis began his first engagement at the Landmark, Lake Tahoe, in the High Sierra Room of Del Webb's. Elvis arrived in Lake Tahoe on the 14th for a week of rehearsals. On opening night no surprise to anyone Elvis broke all Lake Tahoe showroom records with an audience of 3,400, normally the attendance for a show is 2,600

For Elvis' last show the showroom staff squeezed another 600 fans into the showroom to see Elvis. Priscilla came to see the last two shows, as did Vernon.
The next day Elvis left to head for Las Vegas to start preparations for his month long engagement at the recently re-named Las Vegas Hilton International Hotel., Elvis didn't wear his customary Jump-suits. He started to wear two piece suits.
