November 09, 1956 Elvis was staying at the New Frontier in Las Vegas. The following days were filled with the attendances of almost every show in town and dating a dancer named Dottie Harmony. Elvis also went 4 times to Billy Ward and His Dominoes to hear them sing: Don't Be Cruel. November 09, 1957 After a sail of 4 days, Elvis arrived in Honolulu. There was a press conference and then Elvis checked into the Hawaiian Village Hotel. Later that day the Jordanaires arrived by plane. November 09, 1960 On location in Napa, California, the photography for Wild In The Country began. They all stayed at the Casa Bellvue-al Hotel. November 09, 1962 Elvis concluded the work on It Happened At The World's Fair with some publicity stills. After that he traveled to Las Vegas where he saw Johnnie Ray at the Hacienda, as well as many other favorite acts. November 09, 1970 Elvis bought 4 more TCB's. By Larry Carson The Evening Sun Baltimore, November 10, 1971 The drumbeats and the trumpets rose in volume to a crescendo for the introduction of Elvis Presley last night at the Civic Center, but it was all drowned out. The voices of hundreds of screaming women rose even higher in volume, accompanied by the pop of hundreds more flashcubes, lighting up the huge arena as the surly Elvis strode on stage and began his first bing 1950's hit, "It's All Right." More than 13,000 fans, from age 5 to at least 55, and almost exclusively white, had waited through the Introductory acts, the singing Sweet Imitations, a comedian called Jack Cahane and an intermission, when they were urged for the third time to "Get your full length color Elvis poster for only $2 now before they are all gone." Trashy Joke The huge throng had chuckled through Mr. Cahane's retinue of jokes. For instance, Mr. Cahane asked his teen-age son to "take out the garbage," and the youth replied, bouncing on his legs and snapping his fingers, "Man, it's your bag." Some griped about the hour wait, and others about seats high in the upper deck, but it all stopped when the 36 year old "King" of rock 'n' roll stepped out in his white bellbottoms and waistcoat with gold brocade cape, high collar and bright red scarf. And each twitch of that, famous left leg, brought another chorus of frenzied screams, as did his thrusting swings of arms and legs, and his partial splits at the closing of several songs. "Help me make it through the night," he crooned during one song, as a female fan nearby cried "Unnnh! Unnnh! Unnh! Anytime Elvis! Elvis threw his scarf off the stage and security guards bounced to their feet as a flock of women rushed the stage, fighting for the precious material. Elvis cooly donned another from his supply behind the piano. The gyrating star of 1950's rise of rock'n'roll music clearly had his old appeal. He also had some new appeal, picked up in this decade of social conflict and change when unlike many other stars he stayed on top. "He's clean, there's never been a scandal," District Court Judge Edward Hardesty commented as he entered with his wife and John Nuffer 3d, a deputy sheriff in Baltimore city. "He's Just Got It" "He's just got it," Mrs. Hardesty chimed in, beaming. "He's a clean cut all-American boy who came up the hard way," Deputy Nuffer added with pride. A crowd of perhaps 100 persons waited for 45 minutes before the show at the vehicle entrance to the Civic Center. They waited in chilly Hopkins place for a glimpse or a wave, or even maybe a touch from Elvis. "All they gotta do is stop his limousine and there will be trouble," one woman told her husband. Most people remained non violent than as later, as Elvis went through a few of his older hits, such as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," and "Blue Hawaii," but stuck mostly to more modern ones, like "Johnny B. Good," by Chuck Berry, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," by Simon and Garfunkel and even a few first done by Joan Baez. He sang for just over one hour, took one bow, returned for one curtain call, and was gone. Elvis Dazzles Crowd At TCC Arena by Wood Simpson Tucson Daily City November 10, 1972 Elvis Presley, guarded like an easily breakable bauble, pranced on stage at the Comminity Center Arena last night wearing a glittery tank suit open to the navel and dazzled a capacity crowd of about 9,500 with a 'medley of the rock and roll songs that made him famous. Forty. bodyguards reportedly lined the backstage area, waiting for Elvis' limousine to arrive at the center's rear entrance. All photographers were evicted from the area before Elvis would emerge from his car, then police ringed the stage for his approach. However, Elvis did pause long enough backstage to speak to a gravely ill Tucson child who had expressed a desire to meet the idol of the 50s. "He was very nice to her," one source reported, "and gave her his autograph." Presley, who was backed by a big, brassy band from Las Vegas, put together a polished performance, combining upbeat renditions of "Don't Be Cruel," "One Night With You," "Heartbreak Hotel" and "I'm All Shook Up" with more contemporary songs such as the Beatles' "Look Back." His arrival on stage was heralded by one woman who, high up in the seats, saw the superstar and let out a shriek. During his performance, police were required to restrain a few women in the front row from climbing on stage to touch the singer. Presley, giving the fans the full benefit of his famous leer, occasionally tossed out a scarf as a favor, eliciting sighs and more screams. The audience, most of which appeared to be in their 30s, gave Presley a rousing ovation following each number. At 37, Elvis has sold an estimated 96,722,000 singles and appeared in 32 films. His sultry smirk and hip-grinding rhythm remain today much the same as when he hit the big time in 1954 with "That's All Right, Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky." He still contends he suffers from stage fright but looked at ease during his performance last night. He rushed off the stage following his final song and was immediately whisked away by Ms waiting limousine. He barely spoke to the audience during Ms performance, although at one point he remarked: "It's a tough way to make a living." Presley, whose comeback in this decade can only be described as one of the most remarkable show business developments of modern times, is now regarded by insiders as one of the two most popular entertainers in the world � 'the other being the Rolling Stones. His reclusive personality remains a mystery, but his brief meeting backstage with the wide-eyed child suggests that the country boy turned millionaire has retained a laudable sensitivity to those less fortunate than he. Elvis A Parody of His '50s Self by Betty Beard Tucson Star November 1972 The lights were dimmed, the orchestra and band struck up the rolling theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey," women perched on the edges of their seats and in the midst of screams outstrutted Elvis Presley. It was a nostalgic trip more than anything else, but like all the good old times, this was one you couldn't bring back. He is a suburb entertainer who still tries to use all the old tricks to captivate women - half-slanted eyes, tossed hair, an occasional wriggle and jerk and a whole routine of acrobatics in which he ends up almost on the ground with his legs spread apart. But except for one woman on the left of the arena who persistently screamed and a number of others who seemed to find him sexy, to most of the 9,700 on hand, including Elvis, it was a satire on the things he used to do. Compared to the frantic movements that banned his lower body from the Ed Sullivan show back in the 1950s, Elvis was as still as an opera singer. Occasionally, however, he would grin and do some wild dancing, to which the audience always responded with screams. Even a move of his eyeballs, and they screamed. He promised to "do all the songs you want - all 428 of them" and partially fulfilled that oath with his greater hits, Blue Suede Shoes, Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, I'm All Shook Up and after a great deal of teasing and cracking up ("You know what I'm going to do, don't you), he sang "Hound Dog" - first mellow, and then with the old basic rock that led to rock music as it's known today. He also sang some more modern songs and came closest to appearing sincere when he sang a spiritual, "How Great Thou Art." Backing Elvis's voice, which has deepened and bettered with his 37 years was his old band and the Joe Guercio Orchestra. Almost matching Elvis for show was his drummer, Ron Tutt. Always a rather reticent man, he did say a few words to his audience, most of whom paid $10 to see him, such as, "Boy, it's nice to be back in Phoe - Tucson" and "It's a tough way to make a living." After sacrificing three sweaty white scarves to excited women, he donned a white cape that matched his white suit with golden buttons, spread his arms and left during a good round of applause but not a demand for an encore. Maybe the audience knew that once Elvis leaves the stage he won't return, but they probably figured that the old times are gone for good. The crowd seemed just as appreciative of witty Jackie Kehane, who delivered some funny jokes, and three beautiful women, Sylvia Shimwell, Myona Smith and Estell Brown, the stars of the singing group Sweet Inspiration, which was created several years ago as a back up group for Aretha Franklin.
